Spaceship

Artist Tay Drummond’s recently released “Spaceship” has a great sense of experimentation right from the start. It’s a really unusual setup, with a really well-written and interesting song, and overall what you get is something completely fresh, yet familiar enough to keep you comfortable and eager to listen.

Tay Drummond is an American artist, engineer and producer. He grew up in a small townhouse with his mother and two sisters. Tay Drummond was a drummer in his grandfather’s church from the age of 3 and this started his love for music. He got the name “Drummond” because the drums started everything and he was able to show off his ability to play words. Tay started rapping in his uncle’s studio. This was the foundation of his artistic, manufacturing and engineering career. He has found the perfect sound that gives you that live music melody with snare drums. The sound is evocative yet nostalgic, allowing for a new-age revival of hip hop with conscious storytelling delivered in a melodic flow with erratic harmonies.

It’s hard to pinpoint what it is about the music, everything fits together so perfectly, it feels like an instant classic. The song has a stunningly catchy soundscape that’s further enhanced by a massive wall of surround sound, and on top of this, the melody and lyrics add up to everything you’d expect when looking for a brand new hip hop track to sink your teeth into. Something about the way it’s written adds a hearty dose of nostalgia to the environment, but the whole thing feels undeniably new – and that’s what makes it so exciting. The whole thing is addictive, fresh and effective. It’s one that can be played at full volume, it’ll stay with you afterwards – you’ll want to listen again – and yet another reason you’d be a fool to miss a live show from this amazing soul.

To really take on the concept and the substance that makes up the songwriting, it would be crucial, and probably immensely enjoyable, to witness Tay Drummond performing the song live. In amidst a set of much more of his original material, of course. The opening lyric is one to grab your attention in itself, and it only gets more and more interesting from there on in. Well worth a listen.
